If you are looking for cheap upholstery fabric online, then you have come to the right place. Here at Selfmade®, formerly known as STOFF & STIL, we have a wide range of different upholstery fabrics. We have upholstery suede, textured upholstery fabric and upholstery wool.
Martindale - a measure for durability
The fabrics have undergone Martindale testing, ensuring that they are especially durable. Martindale is a device that measures the durability of upholstery fabric. An abrasion resistance of 28,000 Martindale means that the first two threads will break at 28,000 revolutions in a load test which simulates the wear that a sofa might sustain.
In our upholstery fabrics, you will find a wide range of different colours, qualities and prints. We are very sure that you will find something you like and something, which suits your project. Maybe you want to clothe a chair or make a pretty pillow for the sofa.
You can also do a bigger project, like sewing your own curtains or clothe your sofa. You can put your own stamp on your furniture and interior in your home with the upholstery fabrics from Selfmade®. We will even give you guidance on how to clothe your furniture. Our fabrics are sold per meter and the prices are therefore shown per meter. You do not need to buy whole meters though and you can always buy just the amount of fabric you need for a reasonable price.
It is also possible to make a tablecloth out of upholstery fabric and we will actually do all the work for you if you would like. Just wing the “To be sewn into a tablecloth”-option before you put the fabric into the basket. Then our system will calculate the sewing fee and add it to the price of your item. Smooth and simple.
What is the most durable fabric for upholstery?
Upholstery fabrics are made from various fibres, from wool to cotton. However, you can’t just use any wool or cotton fabric to upholster furniture. Upholstery fabric is especially durable and strong. You measure the durability of the material using Martindale testing.
The Martindale test puts pressure and abrasion on the fabric to test how long it will last. Most fabrics are around 20,000 Martindale. We recommend you go for a minimum of 20,000 Martindale when you choose an upholstery fabric for furniture. At Selfmade®, we have fabrics reaching 40,000, which is the most durable!
What is the best fabric to use for chair upholstery?
If your chair is primarily aesthetical in your room, you could consider plush materials like velvet to add luxury.
If you’re upholstering a chair that gets a lot of use, like a dining room chair, strong upholstery cotton or corduroy would be more suitable. It will last longer and can be washed if dirty.
What kind of fabric should I use to reupholster a couch
Cotton twill is a good and affordable material. At Selfmade®, we’ve grouped together a selection of fabrics that are perfect for reupholstering couches. Scroll back up to browse a range of velvets, suedes, cottons, and more that are durable and designed for upholstery.
Can I use curtain fabric for upholstery?
Most curtain fabric is quite light, although heavier than general use fabrics for clothing. It isn’t as durable as upholstery fabric and won’t last as long, even if the curtain fabric is extra thick or thermal.
