Do you know the feeling? That moment when you finally decide to pull on your sportswear again, only to find that it pinches, squeezes and highlights everything you'd rather hide. It can be frustrating and demotivating, especially when you're ready to tackle your workout with renewed energy.

But what if there was a solution that not only solved these problems, but also added a touch of personal style and creativity to your workout wardrobe? You can sew your own sportswear! We have plenty of fabrics suitable for sportswear and a few great sewing patterns to get you started.

Many people will recognize the feeling of bubbling energy after a workout. How about adding the sense of pride of having sewn your own sportswear. That's wellness, isn't it!

When you sew your own sportswear, you have the opportunity to create unique and personalized designs. You can choose colors, patterns and designs that reflect your personality and style, making your own unique clothing.

Sewing your own sportswear also allows you to customize the fit exactly to your body shape and preferences. This ensures that you can be active in clothes that are comfortable to wear and that you feel confident in.

While function is essential for sportswear, it's important that you can feel confident and comfortable in your sports look. You need to find your own style, whether you're the colorful type or more toned down. You can mix and match different styles, colors and patterns to create a unique look.

Breathability of the fabric

Sportswear should have good breathability to allow heat and sweat to escape from your body. For example, polyester, which is a material with good moisture wicking properties, is a good choice as it helps keep you dry and comfortable, such as glossy stretch jersey, made from polyester and elastane.

Stretchability of the fabric

Sportswear should have sufficient stretchability to give you freedom of movement and comfort during exercise.    Therefore, choose materials that contain at least 5% elastane. A material like elastane can provide this stretch.

Of course, sport isn't just sport. Because your needs are obviously very different, whether you play padel twice a week or mountain bike down steep slopes and during rough terrain.

But there are some fabrics you can almost always use because they give you the comfort you need when you exercise.

Jersey

Jersey is an excellent option for sportswear due to its elasticity and softness. Its stretch makes it ideal for tight-fitting clothes like running tights and yoga pants, while its soft quality ensures comfort during physical activity.

Courtelle jersey

A particularly good fabric for sportswear is courtelle jersey. It's a squat-safe, tightly woven jersey quality that allows for all the stretching you can do - without getting bulky.

French terry:

French terry is a thicker fabric ideal for casual sportswear. It's great for sweatshirts and sweatpants as it's both soft and thermally insulating, making it comfortable for pre- and post-workout use.

Taslan:

Taslan / Lyocell is known for its durability and wind and water repellent properties. This makes it particularly suitable for outdoor sportswear, such as running jackets and rainwear, where protection from the elements is important.
